THE NICHOLSON BRIDGE (BIGGER THAN US ALL) (Chris Hludzik) CHORUS: Gotta move 'em out today We've got to find a better way All work, no more play Gotta move 'em out today Here to there is too damn long For the train whistle to cry its' song They should be fast, not just strong Here to there is too damn long So if we can't ride over we'll just ride through Our method is tried and true And if we can't ride through we'll just ride on top No need to slow down, no need to stop So gather your fathers, and brothers too Lord knows that there's a job to do Get your sons and cousins, the order is tall This bridge is bigger than us all CHORUS 2: Gotta move 'em out today We're sure to find a better way All work, no more play Gotta move 'em out today Blood in the concrete, sweat on our brows We never knew and we never learned how It didn't matter, it was all for the goal Of moving people, iron and coal So if they can't ride over we'll just dig through This method is tried and true And if they can't ride through we'll just build on top We won't slow down until we drop 3 long years we toiled in pain For an arched grey tower amongst the plain No fame or fortune, but we answered the call This bridge is bigger than us all CHORUS 3: Gotta move 'em out today There's got to be a better way All work, no more play Gotta move 'em out today Sleepy town in the north Put its youngest and strongest forth To ensure that the railroad line Makes the trip all in good time So now they all ride over and they all ride through Some said it was too good to be true And when they all ride through they all wave from the top No need to slow down, no need to stop 30 dead, maybe more All lost to this industrial war The tears like rain did fall On the bridge bigger than us all. LAST CHORUS: Gotta move 'em out today They finally found a better way So high, was the price to pay Just to move 'em out today. ©2019, Chris Hludzik.

"This is a great song with some local history. Give it a spin." - Joe "Wiggy" Wegleski (Musician ("Jugdish", "Jigsaw Johnny", "Big King Moose")/Engineer/Producer)

"I really like it. Speaks to the coal miner in me and feels like a lot of the interesting conversations I've had with my grandfather about Jessup in the 40's when he was kid, or stories from his grandparents around the turn of the century. The words are intellectually stimulating in a way that not much coming out of our area can do." - Kyle Rebar (Videographer/Photographer/Podcaster/Musician)

"The new song is a masterpiece! Freaking amazing!" - Bryan Brophy (Musician ("An Autumn Sunrise", "Maybe Someday")/Songwriter)

A SONG ABOUT A BRIDGE...?
Yes, but the Tunkhannock Creek Viaduct in Nicholson, Pennsylvania (more commonly known in Northeastern Pennsylvania as "The Nicholson Bridge") is more than just a bridge.

Much has been written about the bridge since its' completion in 1915, but is typically focused on the size of the bridge (it was once the largest concrete structure of its' kind in the world), and how much material was used to construct it.

But what about the reasons the bridge was needed in the first place? How about the people who labored for 3 years constructing it, most of whom had never done work of that kind (or scale) before? And what about the impact it had on the region? These are the more often overlooked aspects of this massive structure.

In this song, I look at the bridge from those perspectives. Most people don't know a lot about the bridge, other than the trivial facts and specifications. As with all my songs, I take a look from a different angle, to try and present a more complete picture.

Hopefully this song sheds some light on something you can't miss, though you may have missed a lot about it. So the next time you drive along U.S. 11 or PA. 92 going into Nicholson, think of this song (or play it) when you see that towering structure appear from behind the trees and then dwarf everything else in sight. There's MUCH more than meets the eye.

Chris Hludzik, August 2019.
